Claim ListingElliot Lake is a city in Algoma District, Ontario, north of Lake Huron, midway between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. Incorporated as a city in 1990, it began as a planned mining community in 1955 after uranium was discovered in the area. Geologist Franc Joubin and financier Joseph Hirshhorn were instrumental in its founding. The population has varied with boom-and-bust cycles from a high of over 26,000 to its current 11,372 residents. Today, Elliot Lake is home to 11,372 residents, surrounded by dense forest, muskeg swamps, numerous lakes, and hills of Precambrian bedrock on the Canadian Shield.
